Q. What is folic acid and what can people do to prevent or correct a deficiency?

Ans. Folic acid is a water soluble vitamin that is needed in small quantities to promote proper nerve function. It plays other important functions too.

The amount of folic acid needed to prevent a deficiency is as little as 400 microgram. This amount could be easily obtained by eating foods rich in folic acid.

Some of the best food sources of folic acid are green leafy vegetables, such as collard greens, cabbage, turnip greens, and spinach. Orange juice is also an excellent source.

If you have a deficiency, it might be necessary to take a vitamin supplement. Your doctor is the best person to determine if you need a supplement and how much you need.

Pregnant women and women of childbearing age, who may become pregnant at any point need to make sure that they are getting enough folic acid.

A deficiency of this important vitamin during the early stages of pregnancy can be very detrimental to an unborn child. It could lead to improper development of the nervous system, and result in a condition called spina bifida.

Folic acid deficiency may be diagnosed based on a blood test, that shows abnormal red blood cells.

If you have doubts about whether or not you might be getting enough folic acid, talk to a registered dietitian. She will be able to take a look at your usual food intake and determine if you are meeting the minimum requirements.

She can also show you what changes you might need to make in order to meet those requirements.

If you have any underlying problems, such as malabsorption or other condition that might interfere with the digestion, absorption, or utilization of the vitamin, your dietitian will be able to tell you what your next step should be.
