Nutrition Bytes_Calcium
Calcium is an important mineral that is found in abundance in milk,
yogurt and other dairy products. Calcium helps to build strong bones
and teeth. Adequate calcium intake in the presence of vitamin D will
help prevent bone loss and osteoporosis. But it does more than that.
Calcium also is also important for proper nerve function. People who
lack adequate calcium and vitamin D are prone to osteoporosis, with
an increased risk for hip and bone fractures. A supplement of calcium
and vitamin D supplementation, along with increased physical activity
may help to decrease bone loss.
Definition
Osteoporosis
- Osteoporosis
is a condition in which the bones become thin and brittle, and can
be easily fractured. This demineralization of the bone may be due
to low calcium intake, inadequate vitamin D, including limited exposure
to sunshine, and limited physical activity. Osteoporosis
is most common among caucasian women, but it can affect anyone.
