What You Can Do To Lose Weight Now

According to health authorities, obesity is rampant. About two-thirds of American adults and a large number of children are overweight or obese.

There is a lot of noise about the problem, but not enough action. The Surgeon General of the United States has declared obesity an epidemic, and warns that if steps are not taken now to stem the tide, we could face dire consequences in the future.

Individual efforts to lose weight have been disappointing in many cases. This points to the need for more intense and creative approaches to losing weight. It also suggests that we pay more attention to prevention. “Prevention is better than cure.”

As a nutritionist and registered dietitian, I am fully aware of the problems people have with losing weight and other situations requiring attention to diet. My commitment is to help people do better at making the kind of food and lifestyle choices that will result in better health.

I look forward to using this column to bring you information that will help you do just that. Contact us for a personalized diet plan.

Here are a few suggestions.

1. Choose foods that are good for you. Fresh fruits and vegetables should be the cornerstone of your diet. These are the foods that give you the bulk of vitamins and minerals you need for important life-enhancing processes. It is important to get at least five servings a day.

2. Eat three to five servings of whole grain breads and cereals. Research shows that whole grains play a key role in promoting a healthy digestive tract. The fiber in whole grains also helps the body to get rid of cholesterol. Limit your intake of refined carbohydrates and fats.

3. Limit your intake of refined carbohydrates and fats. Many people think that carbs are bad for you. What cause the problems are the fats and sugars that are added to otherwise healthy carbs.

4. Watch how much you eat. Learning to control the amount of food you eat is crucial. The more you eat, the more calories you get. Eating smaller portions will help you to cut calories.

5. Get out and get active. Losing weight is not just about cutting back on food. Exercise is an important part of the equation. As you know, you have to burn the fat if you want to lose the weight. Get more active and lose the weight.

6. Make the commitment. Experts and successful dieters agree that one of the most important predictors of successful weight loss is personal commitment. Making the commitment will make it easier for you to overcome some of the obstacles that you are bound to encounter.
