Seven Do's and Don'ts for Dieters

You won't find a shortage of diets and other quick weight-loss schemes on the market. But will they work for you? Or will the only real weight you lose be the weight in your wallet?

If you buy into the promise of losing 10 or more pounds a week, your expectations may be quite unrealistic. Besides, there could be some serious health implications on this type of diet. Even if you do  lose weight, chances are, it will be, at best, temporary and short-lived.

No matter how desperate you might be feeling, don't throw caution to the wind. Try to be practical  and focus on foods that promote health.

Here are some do's and don'ts that will help you keep your focus:

  1. Do make healthy choices and eat sensible portions. Don't starve nor stuff yourself.

  2. Do take stock of why you eat the way you do. Don't use food to de-stress your life or to fill a void.

  3. Do seek the advice of a nutrition professional. Don't assume that because a diet is popular, it will work for you.

  4. Do confide in family members or a trusted friend. Don't try to do it alone.

  5. Do set realistic goals. Don't be disappointed if you are not losing weight as quickly as you would like to.

  6. Do increase your level of physical activity. Don't just sit around all day and expect the pounds to melt away.

  7. Do persevere. Don't give up.
