Fight
Fat with Food
This article is
especially for those of you who think that you have to starve yourself
in order to lose weight. The truth is, you will shed a few pounds on
a starvation diet.
But after a while, your body wises
up to the fact that it is not getting what it needs.
That puts your survival mechanism into
play. The result? Your metabolism slows down, energy is conserved, and
you stop losing weight, at least, you don’t lose at the rate that you
did initially.
I know what you're thinking. "But
everything I eat seems to get plastered on my hips," you say. Well,
not everything.
What you need to do is identify those
foods that are really responsible for your weight gain, and cut them
out. Finding suitable alternatives will be the key to your success.
You also need to be able to allow yourself some comfort food. Not the
kind that will trigger a binge or cause a relapse.
Like any other addiction, you have to
stay away from foods that you simply cannot eat without going on a binge.
But let’s get to the heart of the matter. How do you fight fat with
food? Here are six ideas to put you on the right path:
-
Eat at regular times.
Skipping meals only creates an uncontrollable hunger that leads
to unhealthy snacking and overeating.
-
Make breakfast an important
part of your diet plan. Eating breakfast does more than
break the fast and give you the energy start you need to make it
through the day. It is a great way to get the vitamin C and fiber
that you need.
- Keep lots of low-calorie
fruits close at hand. This will keep
you from going to the vending machines and loading up on high fat
foods and sugary sweets.
- If you must eat out, choose
where to eat as if your health depended on it. Going into
a fast food establishment, or a restaurant that’s seething with the
aroma of foods you love to eat can easily trigger an eating frenzy.
So, be careful about where you eat and what you eat when dining out.
- Make fresh and succulent
fruits and vegetables the cornerstone of every meal. If you
want more nutritional value for your calorie intake, it can’t get
any better than filling up on nature’s own store of nutrients.
- Practice portion control.
The bottom line in any successful diet program is controlling
how much you eat. Understanding the calorie values of different foods
will help you to learn which foods might be safe at almost any level
of intake, and which ones you have to keep to a minimum.
