Ask Dr. Dorene

Q. I am 30 pounds overweight and thinking about going on a low-carb diet. Some people say it really helps them to lose weight. Then I hear that it may not be safe. What do you think?

Answer. A number of people have told me that they have lost on the low-carb diet that they were not able to shed before.

That being said, health experts warn that the diet could spell trouble for people with kidney disease. Nutritionists also warn the abnormally high fat and cholesterol content of the diet could be a problem for some people.

In the final analysis, you have to weigh the risks and the potential benefits.
I would certainly advise you to consult a registered dietitian before beginning any drastic diet, such as the low-carb diet. You might be able to get the results you want without going to extremes. But that means getting professional help with personalizing a diet to suit your need.
