Mind your Diet

Just as no two people are alike, dietary needs differ. But some basic principles can be applied to most circumstances. Here are a few dietary guidelines to keep in mind if you have type 2 diabetes:

  • Plan meals ahead to include the proper balance of carbohydrates, fats, and protein.

  • A significant part of your carbohydrate source should be high fiber.

  • Avoid concentrated sweets. A small portion may be included in your diet plan.

  • High fat foods may lead to increased level of circulating fatty substances in your blood, so you will have to go easy on fats.

  • Eat at regular times. Do not eat too much at one time, or wait too long between meals.

  • Drink plenty of water.

  • Check your blood sugar regularly and report anything out of the ordinary to your doctor.

  • When dining out, plan to eat at restaurants that offer healthy options.

  • Don't overlook the importance of exercise. Get the recommended amount of exercise daily. Twenty minutes to one hour is a good target.

  • Before you try any herb or other alternative remedy, be sure to discuss it with your primary care physician. Mixing medicines and herbs can be dangerous. Also, be sure to check the training and background experience of anyone who proposes alternative treatments. If they are simply marketing a product that they know nothing about, be wary.
